Where would you like to play baseball?

So, can I state that, overall, most of us agree that DeFremery park will remian our home base, but eveyone is open to playing around at other fields evey now and then, either though force or choice?

Here's the Deal...

Post by Baseball=Life »

After further consideration, I think we should go the Squatting route. Unless others vehemently disagree, that's what we'll do. This requires some location flexibility on our part at times. So, to clarify...

DeFremery is our default "Home Park".

DeFremery is booked every Sunday through April 17th, except March 27th. I expect that we will be able to use our Home Park when we want after 4/17.

Also, I checked various West Oakland fields today to see how they react to rain... Raimondi doesn't drain well, and neither does Poplar. DeFremery, on the other hand, drains quite well. My point---we might get to play DeFremery even prior to 4/17, assuming the other users cancel due to weather and yet we find it acceptable.

The field we'll use until DeFremery becomes open after 4/17 will be Raimondi. Except March 27th, on which we'll definitely use DeFremery. And except if that above scenario involving rain occurs.

We will update the website Sunday mornings to say not only whether the field is playable, but also which field to go to if it is. And if Raimondi ends up having users, we will adjust and move to one of the new fields (you'll be informed which if that occurs). Directions will be provided as well.

Finally, I want to say that, after we confirm some distances & dimensions, we really ought to play some of these other fields I've found. It will be fun to play different places occassionally, assuming they are DeFremery size, at a minimum. You will be informed if we move the game to another field to try it out.

Bottom line: Play Raimondi every Sunday until after 4/17 (except 3/27), unless you are informed we're trying one of the new fields, and/or unless rain dictates to use DeFremery as described above.

Final Note: Once we reach the 4/24 DeFremery availability date, we will revisit the discussion about how often to use Raimondi from then on. We'll have several Raimondi games to inform our views by then. At the most, however, we will play Raimondi 1/2 the time. I suspect Raimondi will be in heavy demand by then, though.

DeFremery vs Raimondi

Post by Baseball=Life »

After our first full game at Raimondi, I noticed my prior remark about "No More Homeruns" may have been too limited.

It's a drawback at Raimondi that we can barely get extra-basehits, never mind HRs. In 15 1/2 innings there, we've only see 6 total extra-base hits, all doubles.

(Peter - 1, Cuong - 2, Anthony - 1, Chris - 2)

And those extra-base hits were the keys to big innings. Even when one team got 4 hits in an inning, they could only get 1 run across since all were singles. This happened a few different times in the game.

Hopefully with a dry (and mowed) field, the ball will have a chance to roll to the outfield walls, and we'll see more extra-base hits. Those sort of conditions would have to be the case for any Triple. I wonder who'll be the first to get a triple, if it can even happen at all!

By the way, this is not to say I dislike Raimondi... It's definitely fun!! Scoring is much more of a team effort there since you can't rely on a big hit to score multiple runs.

In fact, we've only seen one play so far where 2 runs scored on a hit (Anthony's single to CF scoring me and Peter). Maybe it happened another time too, Kenyatte's 2 RBIs in the 7th (scored Michael and Nick?). But yeah, looks like extra base hits (and thus big innings) will be tough to come by.

I think we had a huge lack of extra base hits mainly because of the field conditions, when the ball just stops dead when it hits the outfield grass, its easy for the outfielders to play in and not have to worry about a ball skipping by. It would be interesting to see how hitting went once it's dry and the grass is a little bit shorter.

Could some of the OFs (Nick, Chris, Rob, Carlos....) talk about this? How was it playing out there?
