Registration closed except by request

Newest update, Monday 5/18/2021:

Given how long OPB has been inactive, registration will continue to be closed to new members.

I think this forum is, at least currently, only of interest to those of us who participated in the league. I migrated and updated this board as a weird, stubborn act of connection to the past. I figured that at least some of us might want to keep the tenuous thread that connects us intact. At the very least, it's a curiosity.

Maybe someday it could become something else, but right now it's for us. Let me know if you have other thoughts on this!

Prior update, Sunday 6/21/2009:

I'm going to close registration to all new usernames at the end of the day Sunday, because when registration is open, spammers flock to this humble little forum.

So new folks can still register themselves before or after Sunday's game.

After today, let me or Peter Lauterborn know if you know of someone who would like an account on the forum, and Peter or I will open it up to them. (The best way to do it is to tell one of us your email address and desired username, either in person or via email/pm. Then one of us will create the account with a temporary password, and then you can log in and change the password if you want.)

Previous update, Tuesday 5/26/2009:

I hear there are some new people, so for a limited time I have now opened registration up to anyone.

You can now sign up for the site without me doing anything.

If spammers become a serious problem again, I'll close registration, so register NOW if you want to.

I also gave Peter the power to delete spammers, so don't piss him off.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Jason

p.s. I plan to come back and play at some point... I really do.

Original message, Wednesday 12/27/2006:

Hey guys:

I'm getting really sick of deleting new spammer accounts.

Even though they can't post, just being in the memberlist is advantageous to them, and it's a pain in the ass to keep up. I don't know if you've noticed, but I've deleted probably about 50 accounts in the last week.

What I'm thinking about doing is effectively closing off registration by disallowing all new usernames. And when someone legitimately wants to join the forum, someone new who actually comes to the games, I can open it up for them.

What do you think?

Thanks.

that doesn't seem unreasonable.

edit: but then again... what i consider reasonable has been called into question on more than one occasion.

Heh.

I'm guessing people in general don't care... so I'm going to go ahead and do it... especially considering there have been two new registrants since yesterday and I imagine a flood today.

Maybe this should be dropped for a little bit. We are getting a good number of new people each week, and easy registration on this forum was a good tool for keeping people around.

Just a thought.

Use your new powers for good, not evil, Peter.
