batting cage practice

Post by tallguy »

Anybody want to share the $30 fee (and time, of course) for a half hour of cage time at the Bladium in Alameda this Saturday?
I resent paying $2.50 for 20 pitches when I know I'm gonna want at least 100 pitches. The half hour rate is just so much better value, but at the same time, even if I can swing the bat for that long (dubious!) it will really tire me out for the next day's game.
Any time after 10:30 AM should be fine with me.

Hey Paul,

Sounds interesting...

What is the pitching style---what speeds are available? I don't think it would help me if I were to practice hitting real fastballs. That would probably actually hurt my timing for our pitching at DeFremery. So is there a medium speed.... what are the options? Softball?

This info might be useful for others to help decide if they want to participate. Myself, even in the best scenario, have another plan for this Saturday---Oakland A's Fanfest! That's scheduled from 11-4, though I doubt I'll stay more than an hour or two. When did you have in mind for the cages?

I just realized

Post by Baseball=Life »

I just realized that I should probably do a final exercise session for my knees on Saturday, rather than refining my swing. I'm playing without the knee brace for the first time in a year this Sunday.

But you're right the deal is much better to buy by the time than by the pitch count. I'll definitely be into doing that on another occasion.

I've never been there before, so I can't say what kinds of pitch the machines will do. However, I do know it's one of the newest kind, where they have an big LED display to simulate the pitcher's wind-up. I think I have read elswhere that this kind of machine will do up to 65-70 mph.

If no-one else can make it, I will go whenever turns out to be most convenient for me, or whenever I can get away from the weekend chores, I should say. But, my schedule is pretty much open that day, so I could probably meet whoever there whenever was most convenient for them!

whoops, that was me.

I am having the same problem as Dan, where right after I log in, I'm logged out. For me it works right the second time, every time. So, I just have to log in twice in succession every time. What's up with that?

Good to see not only my retarded IE having issues.

Anyways, I'd love to go to the cages sometimes, but Saturdays are bad for me (work for most of the day). That and Alameda is a long way away for me, and taking the bus there is way too much trouble...

Use Firefox and/or stay logged in

You guys should choose to remain permanently logged in to avoid these situations. I think you just have to check the 'remember login' box at the login screen. All it does is create a cookie in the temporary internet files folder to remember the login info, and, even if someone posts in your name, who really cares? It's not like your credit card number is available via the Forum.

Another suggestion is to ditch Internet Explorer altogether. Use Mozilla Firefox as your browser. It will import all of your Favorites, so you won't lose them. It's not vulnerable to hackers the way IE is. It has a "tab" feature that makes viewing mulitiple windows much less messy. Go for it, many advantages, plus then you get to stick it to Microsoft. I haven't had any problems with any internet-related computer usage since installing Firefox about 2 months ago.

I just got back from a trial visit to the Bladium, and now have mucho blisters on my hands, so I guess, seeing as no-one else can make it anyway, I won't go tomorrow as well.
They have two machines, one which pitches "fast" all the time, the other "medium", speeds were guess-timated at 70 and 50 mph by the staff there. I can say that the medium is noticeably quicker than we pitch at DeFremery, and the fast, well I've never faced real heat so I hardly hit anything from that machine. If that is 70, I can hardly even imagine what a 90 mph major league pitch is like. I'm not convinced the distance is regulation, though. It didn't look like 60 feet to me, if I'm right that effectively increases the pitch speed. The LED display is better ignored, it is rarely timed correctly to match the release of the ball. The staff are aware of this now, and will look into it.
Well, I had a great time. As is usual for me, I just couldn't bring myself to stop when it would have been advisable. I had been given about 15 tokens for free, to try the place out, so I faced around 300 pitches! No wonder I have blisters - you know me, I swung at everything...
If I get a membership then I would get unlimited use of the cage for no extra cost, so I might do that. It's not cheap, though, so me old Dutch may well crush that dream. Ah, the married life.

Why? It's just a bit of Cockney rhyming slang. Or, am I ignorant of some other usage?

Dutch = Dutchess of Fyfe = Wife
