Milton Bradley?

That's MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL. Talk amongst yourselves. Go to a game once in a while.

Saarloos for Bradley?

I'd do it in a heartbeat!

Bradley is clubhouse poison and should be avoided at all costs.

The A's are never going to make it anyway, so it doesn't matter to begin with.

Milton Bradley?

Post by Southpaw Slim »

Wow. I thought Bradley was a non-option considering his attitude problems, but it looks like Beane is willing to give him a chance. What do you all think of this idea?

I was initially opposed, but Bean's point of view makes sense to me. The A's were able to absorb Jose Guillen without any problems.

It all comes down to who the A's would have to give up.

If Zito, no thanks.

If Saarloos, let's do it. Loiza has pushed Kirk to the bullpen as it is, and he should be starting.

I'd take MB... He would not be a cancer in the Oakland clubhouse. Who would he fight with ? Ultra laid back Chavy, Zito or the rest of the surf dudes ? There's no Jeff Kent like dude here and he has matured some since Cleveleand. There's a lot of old school baseball types that hang around the Oakland clubhouse. Shooty Babbit (although he's a scout for Arizona, he's always in the Oakland dugout), Rene Lachemen, even Macha behind closed doors. Wash will knock some sense into him old school baseball style if he got out of line. I think it would be a good fit for Bradley and for the A's. The A's need some fire in a leadership position and Chavy just isn't the personality type for that job (save for two closed door players only meetings last year).

I'd still prefer to have Junior come back to the AL and DH for the A's.

Yeah, I agree Bradley could work for the A's. But the A's site is now saying the focus is on Frank Thomas or Mike Piazza. I was surprised to read this from Beane on Thomas:

"He looks fantastic," Beane said of Thomas, who turns 38 next May. "The best I've ever seen him, actually."

Hmmmmmmm.

I'm a Frank Thomas fan but he'd be a wash on the A's. He got a ring (won't he ?) this year although he did not contribute. At this stage he'd be better on a big money contender in the AL where he could DH and contribute but not hinder the team when and if he got hurt. Piazza..... hmmm... He is intriguing if he will play DH and be content to be the back up cather and 1st baseman. He'd have to change his attitude a bit

Scott.. why do I feel I saw a rush in posts from you rencently?

I think one, solid hitter would be good for the A's. Frank will be cheap. I'd go for it. Worst case, he ends up on he waver wire.

I'm just happy the Giants got rid of Hawkins for Kline. Now that's a trade up, for sure.

Well, this looks good for the A's: they made the move for MB. Also, the A's sould be glad about Perez. I watched him a lot last year vs the Giants, and he is solid in case someone gets hurt... solid defense, and hits for a good AVG.

Yeah, and earlier we were envisioning having to give up a starting pitcher like Saarloos to get to an OBP machine like Bradley, instead it's Andre Ethier, who did hit .366 this last fall and definitely broke through last year, but he still probably doesn't have the power to be much more than an average regular in an outfield corner.

As retep says, the A's get a second useful player in Perez. He should supplant Marco Scutaro as the team's primary infield backup, being able to spell Chavez, who didn't opt for surgery.

In fact, it looks like Beane may have pulled a bit of a fast one on LA.

Now, the question is, are they still going to offer Thomas a 1 year incentive-based contract? And if so, where does that leave Dan Johnson? With Swish 1B, Payton/Kotsay/Bradley in the OF, Keilty 4th outfielder, Thomas DH.......... no place for Johnson.

Well, either way, the A's are looking very good in the AL West for 2006.

I'd put johnson at first, not swisher, and have swish platoon with payton. plus, someone always gets injured (knock on wood), so we'll be covered. Question: What do you think the batting order should be?

no platoon, trade payton we dont need him now aand he is to good to be a 4th outfielder and he probally costs too much to be 4th outfielder. and if some one gets injured use a call up. but payton will demand to play every day he deserves to so trade him cause you cant fuck over your rookies. shwisher was runner up for rookie of the year you dont say "good job there the bench!!

I agree. As much as I love Payton after the second half of '05, he's eating up $4M on our payroll and will platoon at best. This is a guy who needs some love, and I don't think he'll get much if we still have Kielty to use as a fourth outfielder. I just wonder who Beane could get for him. Chances are, it was a mistake keeping him on the payroll (unless he tears it up this spring).

Although, the A's picked up Bradley and didn't have to trade Saarloos, got Thomas, and picked up Loaiza without losing anyone who was going to get playing time anyway. We made off like bandits this year.

Best Beane offseason yet!

On second thought, I think the A's should just think that they have four guys for three spots (Johnson, swisher, payton, and thomas). between the four of them, there's always one who can take the day off to rest, or if there's an injury. plus, thomas might need more rest than others. i wouldn't trade payton, i don't think you'd get proper value for him
