Thursday practices

Post by tallguy »

I am going to be free to practice pretty much every Thursday evening, 6-9, for the next couple of months, at least. Dropping the old dutch off in Berkeley before 6, so practice could be any of our usual places, or somewhere closer to Berkeley, starting around 6ish. Anyone else interested in establishing this day and time as a regular practice?
Either way, I'll be out there even if it is just me, either pitching at one of those targets on a stand, or working on my swing with the old hit-a-way. The latter I really like, so long as you can find a tree or pole that is not too thick, it works great.
You guys have got to see the new training bat I bought. It is truly of comic proportions - 37" and 55oz! It's wood, I've been hitting with it, that is really a tough workout.

Well the wacky world of schedule makers has made my life much easier, giving me thursdays and weekends off. So I can practice all day Thursdays if I wanted to. So I'll be there as long as I can get some directions.

Say Ken, where do you think we should go? Curt Flood seems to be pretty realiable, unlike the places in Berkeley we tried to use. Once baseball season is over, it'll be a different story, but for now maybe we should say Curt Flood, with the possibility of having to move to one of several backup locations. Right now the fact that the lights don't come on there is not an issue.

As a note, a new baseball field is being built in berkeley, over where East Campus used to be, but wont be ready till like next year.

Flood is pretty hard for me to get to, any location in Berkeley or North Oakland would be much better for me.

Fine with me. San Pablo was available a couple of times, we should try there first, perhaps. For a fallback we could try Bushrod. What others?

San Pablo is the easiest for me to get to, but if you're going to be in Berkeley and can pick me up, the location doesn't matter that much to me.

We'll try San Pablo first then, I'll be driving if we need to move somewhere we can just leave your bike locked up there, like last time.
I primarily want to practice pitching tomorrow, I'm beting you won't mind primarily hitting?

Rich, were you planning on coming tomorrow? Let me know. What with this game I'm going to be in with Lyman on Friday, it would be better for me to skip tomorrow and start the regular practices next week.
Same goes for anyone else who was thinking to come down. (BTW - San Pablo park in Oakland is close to San Pablo Ave and, er, Russell St. Google maps that intersection, it's a couple of blocks over from there. Anyway, my point is, I'm only going to bail if no-one other than me and Ken is coming this week.

OK, seems like it would just be Ken and myself this week, so, having already spoken to him, I'm going to postpone the start of regular Thursday practices until next week.
Sucks to do this on the first week, but it doesn't seem to put anyone out, and after this week there shouldn't be any reason I wouldn't be able to go. (By next week school is back in for the old dutch, so I'll be allowed out in the evening...)

OK, so this week should be the first of my regular Thursday night practice. If anyone wants to face my pitching, I will be happy to give my arm a workout. If someone wants to pitch themselves, I'll happily catch or hit for them. If no-one is interested, I'll probably still throw, just to the backstop. Or I'll set up the Hit-A-Way.
I plan on going to San Pablo park (in Berkeley, map here:
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=russell+s ... 4636&hl=en )
If that is not available then I'll go over to Bushrod
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=racine+st ... 4636&hl=en.
If that is not available, I'll just set up the Hit-A-Way wherever I can, and workout my swing.
I expect to get to San Pablo between 6:15 and 6:30. If you go there and don't find me, you can either try Bushrod, or call my cell: 510 205 2676.

San Pablo will remain in use every Thursday for the foreseeable future. I guess the problem with the Berkeley/North Oakland area is that, wherever there is a park with both a mound and lights, it will almost certainly be in use in the evening.
Bushrod...has a mound, but no lights, so it was not in use. There was light to practice by until around 8, maybe 8:15 at a stretch. So that is one option. Having thrown both on the flat and from a mound yesterday, I can say it is definitely preferable to have the mound.
However, myself I am free to practice until at least 8:30, so somewhere with lights would allow for a longer practice. Curt Flood was used for an afternoon/evening practice a few weeks back, I believe (the time before the daytime practice there). Can those who went to that comment if the lights came on?

Lights only come on if the field is rented and lights are requested.
