The Curt Flood Compromise?

I have just been doing some measuring of my own, and my numbers agree well with Anthony's for Franklin. I used for my scale the 100 yds from end zone to end zone of the football field you can see marked out on the Curt Flood photo.
I measured Raimondi LF to be 321', with RF being a little shorter, at 285. This can be our reference for "big enough that no-one hits it out". I don't think even Will could make that hit, not off our slow pitching, anyway.
The circle-segment shaped field at Arroyo Viejo is way too small, looks like a little league field, upon measuring it out. The square one, though, is interesting. It is 290 to RF, maybe 270 to LF. We might see one hit out of LF there, but probably only from live pitching to a metal bat, hit really well, and right off the sweet spot.
So, if that is the McConnell field we're talking about, it looks (from the sky) to be a good size and shape for us.
Franklin, I don't know, looks like we'd have the same problem in RF. It's only around 235', that's about the same as Defremery. Unless that fence is really high.

Nick and I just got back from closely inspecting Franklin. I have been converted! Franklin looks like it would be a fun place to play, comparable to DeFremery at the very least. Here's my impression of the salient details:


open gate / access : YES

cage to block foul balls: YES

stands for our many fans: YES

LF adequate distance/fence heighth: YES, with slight possibility of HR robbery

RF adequate distance/fence heighth: YES

CF adequate distance/fence heighth: YES (ok now due to increased fence heighth)

Foul poles: YES, LF pole inaccurate (easily solved)

Infield Size: in between DeFremery and Curt Flood

Batter's Box: better than Curt Flood

Space behind home plate: better than Curt Flood

On Deck Circle Out of the Way: YES

Parking: GOOD

Location: GOOD

Outfield Grass: ADEQUATE with partial warning track in LF

Mass Transit: AC Transit # 40 right next to Field, catch the 40 at 12th St. BART

Store Nearby: YES

Shade: Minimal

Other Users: Also probably Minimal on Sundays

Bathroom: NONE

Rich: Franklin Field is at 11th AVE and Foothill BLVD. (Foothill Blvd is where E. 16th street would be, but it's called Foothill Blvd instead.)


Daniel: Hey, no, we're not moving. We just wanted to have a backup field ready in case we get moved again. Plus, this field has a lot of upsides, so we should give it a try anyways at some point. I'm thinking the next scheduled DeFremery game (2nd week August, Sunday the 14th) would be a good opportunity to give Franklin a try.

I really enjoy playing with you guys and I will probably be showing up some more as fall & winter come around. I think that one big benefit of Curt Flood is the GRASS INFIELD. There is not another park that I have seen in Oakland with a grass infield.
Raimondi will be more available in a month or so.
but still-DIRT Infield.
Bushrod is an OK park but dirt infield and no fences.
Franklin is not bad and would be a good backup to Flood as it is fairly close to Flood.

Mike... are you kidding... BUshrod SUCKS... no right field not center field left ... the outfield scarred by soccer players ( really good internatioanal soccer games by the way)... That was my homefield in high school and I always cursed Rickey Henderson for not putting u0p some money to build his old school a field on campus or at least improving that one. He knows its bad caused he played there from '75-'79

Yeah, it's hard to understand why some of these guys don't make a priority out of helping improve upon the place they learned and had their first opportunities. David Cone went to my high school a few years before me and he kicked down a lot of dough for sports facilities at the school. Too bad I was umpiring (and not playing) baseball during high school.

And, Paul, 275 is not that far. I've hit balls that were mesured to be well over 300. You could do it too.... even in our normal games.

Hey I'm just saying that Franklin's infield size is slightly bigger than DeFremery's but not as big as Curt Flood's.
