Baseball Cards

I haven't bought a baseball card in about 20 years. I was in 7-11 today and saw a pack of Topps and was brought back to my childhood collections (Some of which I still have in storage somewhere). I capitulated and bought a pack. What happened to the gum ?My question is this... Do any of you other adults still buy baseball cards... IS there any shame on your part of being a grown ass man and still buying baseball cards ? I think I want to start collecting again...

Sports card collecting has taken a dive in the face of CCGs (collectible card games, for the many/all of you who are less nerdy than myself), but I collected when I was a kid and have I several thousand card collection highlighted by McGwire, Bonds and (M) Ramirez rookie cards.

I used to collect baseball cards BIG TIME. I was obsessed with it, actually. Every lawn I mowed, every driveway I shoveled snow from, it was all in the name of buying baseball cards. Every birthday, every holiday went to this. I managed to build up an awesome collection, including every Topps set from 1973-1993. On top of that, I had my gems, tons of old amazing cards. I wasn't into getting multiple copies of new rookies, hoping to capture a star. I focused on Roberto Clemente, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Sandy Kofax, Mickey Mantle, etc. Well, I built up a notebook of tons of great, old cards. Unfortunately that notebook was stolen in a house robbery. Luckily, I still have the collection of sets. They were being stored at grandma's house.

In 1984 my friends and I had a baseball card club and we decided that being Royals fans was inadequate if we wanted to really be baseball fans. Meaning, because mind you at this time the Royals were perennial contenders, our baseball universe needed to go beyond the AL West (KC's division at the time). So I picked the Padres for NL West, Mets for NL East, and Tigers for AL East. Of course I stayed with Royals for AL West.

This proved to be great choices. That year the Padres and Tigers made it to the World Series. The next year the Mets won the world series, and the Royals won it all in in '85. So my teams really cleaned up and I was thus locked into baseball addiction forever.

That explains so much. I can't believe I haven't heard that story yet.

I have nearly the whole Topps set from 1989 (no more than a couple dozen short). I have the Topps '89 "Traded" set, save for the Griffey Jr. rookie card that my brother or my stepbrother stole. And I have at least 700 of the Topps '90 set.

But mostly I was pretty frustrated by how hard it was to complete a set being a total purist (only buying packs).

So... I haven't bought a baseball card in 17 years but I don't see anything wrong with it.

Actually, I take it back -- I did buy a box of unopened 1989 wax packs at some point within the last 5-10 years, but it was just as frustrating as it was back then (I still recognized a lot of the common cards).
