Play ball! Then talk about it. Or vice versa.

I really miss this.

Post by Southpaw Slim »

It's been too long since we played some OPB. Even though there's no possibility of being able to play Sunday baseball right now, I really miss having the camaraderie we shared -- as well as the occasional heated argument -- and the excitement of high-scoring games. I hope someday we'll be able to bring the league back to its former glory.

At least the A's are destroying the league in an historic manner to keep us occupied.
I intended to write something to remind everybody of my superior prowess.

It is probably no surprise that I, the admin of the forums, am the first to discover this post! It is also probably no surprise that it took nearly three years for that to happen. It is incontrovertible that you jinxed the A's pretty hard-core, given the date of your post.

I think doing OPB again would be cool, but I don't know who would have the time and energy to try to build up a critical mass of people who will show up regularly enough. Several of us are old and married now.

As an alternative (and I know it's not baseball), but the SF pickup softball folks are really cool and they have kept their thing going for a long time. Scott and I have made it to quite a few games over the years including a couple months ago. I definitely plan to go to more. It's similar enough to baseball that it's still fun. They also end up getting two games in and start promptly at 9 am on Saturdays, usually at Balboa Park if they can get it. Their site is at http://www.anythreewords.com/pickupsoftball/.

I also can't believe this board is still functioning... you can safely bet it has all kinds of security holes. Anyway, thanks for your dogged dedication three years ago, Nick. :)

Anyone still check to see if this board still exists? If so, here's your once every three years update!

Today I transferred a whole bunch of domain names away from GoDaddy to Namecheap, including gohlkusmaximus.com. I also plan to consolidate all of my websites, which currently live on two hosts, on one. (Consolidating to NearlyFreeSpeech.net, for the record.) So just checking on the health of my sites, I came back to this board again. I went through a fair amount of trouble to update the phpBB software in 2018 because the old version didn't work at all. That was probably almost totally pointless.

Anyway, in the time since we launched this site, I moved from Oakland to San Francisco back to Madison. I extricated myself from several unhealthy relationships I was in at the time and met my now-wife in 2011. I also extricated myself from the unhealthy relationships I was in with the Bay Area non-profit environmental community, and I work for the alma mater. We lost some folks.

And here I am, mid-effing-pandemic, updating our old-ass OPB bulletin board. As you may or may not know, I'm pretty sentimental about the good things in life, and OPB was good.
