Play ball! Then talk about it. Or vice versa.

MVP 8/20 Live game

For me its a no brainer. Dan R. with a CG 4 hitter and 8K's. Awesome stuff!

I thought for the most part both sides played a pretty solid game. I definitly had a good time.

And big thanks to Paul and Scott for Umpiring.

No problem. I'd have to agree with Pat's selection. I learned something though--I should have considered infield more when splitting up teams (beyond catchers, pitchers, and first basemen)--I think that detracted a bit from what was otherwise a very good game. I'll do a better job with that next time.

Hey, not to pull an "I told you so", but it turns out I was actually right about how to define a "foul tip". It is a live ball, and, yes, runners may advance. A foul tip is when the batter (in any count) makes contact with the ball using their bat---but the ball then does a sharp, direct path into the catcher's glove (ie no arc, no popup---it's a linear path from bat to catcher's glove).

Yeah, I went home and looked it up because I felt bad for fucking up the call, and then, to my surprise, it turned out I had it right, lol.

If you think about it, it makes perfect sense. It's not fair to place disadvantage on the offense (by calling it an at-bat-ending strike, rather than calling it a foul that continues the at-bat) without then counterbalancing that disadvantage by giving that offense's runners a chance to move on the play. If foul tips weren't live, it would be a definite advantage for the defense.

Foul balls, however, are of course dead balls on which no runners may advance. Ah, baseball.

well, i'll be... i coulda sworn it was someone in this group (i actually thought it was you Scott) who originally told me it was only a "foul tip" if there were two strikes on the batter. Oh well. Now we know.
