Losing sight of the vision.

Play ball! Then talk about it. Or vice versa.

Losing sight of the vision.

Post by Southpaw Slim »

I remember back in 2003 when the league started as a way for a group of co-workers and friends to get together and have a laid-back game while shooting the shit and eating barbecue. Hell, we had guys drinking beer in center field. Now, it's turned into a fight-till-the-death power struggle with people pulling as hard as they can to move the league into the direction they think it should go. We spend almost as much time debating the rules as we do playing the game. Daniel R said something which really struck a chord with me.

We get so caught up in what constitutes as a hit or an error or when the runner can go home or who's responsible for which out that often we forget that the real reason to get together is so that a bunch of "good dudes" can toss a ball around and have fun without worrying about the serious matters in our lives. It's a chance to escape from the hustle and bustle of city life so we can just relax for a few hours. I hate the false importance placed on our games. As I've said long ago, nobody has a contract riding on their performance from game to game. It's just that, a game. I wish we could just get back to that part of it and focus on having a good time and not on who's right, wrong, or responsible.

And yeah, maybe it is just "softball with baseballs" but that's what drew everyone together, and I thought we were all having fun. It's when the topic of competition came into play that the league started to change. No longer was it about having fun, but about being the best and winning the game. Peoples' feelings have been trampled on in "the interest of the game," encouraging more intense competition, and thusly more intense outbursts. I've witnessed skirmishes between friends and thought nothing of it, but I've also seen non-friendly fights. I know it's been a while since either have happened, but I don't want us to lose sight of what this league is supposed to be: a game where there are no losers and we hold hands and pick flowers after the game.

Edit: Excuse me for being sentimental. There are parts of the original setup that I hate. I'm glad we don't play with little kids anymore. (Not Nick C. That guy's money.)
I intended to write something to remind everybody of my superior prowess.

Yes, thank you Nick. This is what I was going after in my “back in the day” thread, but that wasn’t flying.

I feel responsible for some of the mess. Things started going downhill once I pushed for stats to been recorded. I often wish I hadn’t started that. I am also sorry for my many explosions, both on the field and off. I’ll explain more later.

I have so much to say, but I’m just home from fighting the Board from closing this elementary school, and I am physically and emotionally fried. Surprise, surprise, but I used up all my snazzy debating, arguing, and rhetorical skills at that, for a real cause, and have no shame in saying that I have nothing more that I feel like typing. Yes, I am double posting this comment, but if anyone really wants to know what I am feeling, call me at any time (415) 79344454

Three things:

1. Has anyone seen the weather forecast for Sunday? No, well to quote weather.com it will bo in the low 70s with ABUNDANT sunshine. Sounds liek a perfect opportunity to release all this tension with some awesome baseball and then have a dandy ol' time holding hands and picking flowers afterwards. That leads me to # 2...

2. It is probably a good thing that I had yet to join this league when these dudes posted on our board because I would have lost it. Who are those dudes? Can we challenge them and go whoop their asses? God, I can't stand when people talk shit that way and don't get it stuffed back down their throat.

3. I was just thinking, my desire to play more live games was also heavily influenced by our showing against that real team a month ago. I felt we performed way beyond our expectations and it caused me to want to continue to test our mettle if only against each other but preferably against THE THEIF...idiot.
Mr. Mcgee don't make me angry...you wouldn't like me when I'm angry!!!
