Yeah, I'm open to trying it out. Let's test it at the March 5th game.
There are two benefits if this works out: 1) we would need 1 fewer players to be able to have a game; and 2) the debates about whether a "throwing pitcher" should have made a defensive play or not would become unnecessary (IE if a pitcher from the actual fielding team drops a pop-up, then it's the fielding team's loss and the batter reaches base---currently in those scenarios the "throwing pitcher" is blamed and an out is recorded.)
This will work as long as the fielding team pitcher is honest about always trying to throw the pitches where the batter wants them to be located (and at the requested speed as well).
So, yeah, let's test it out March 5th.

We had this conversation a while ago and I never figured out why people are so sure that people won't be fair. :shrug:retep wrote:... and no one gets kicked off a team... I am down to try that for one game.... but the other team better not fuck around wioth 2 strikes! That's the issue.
I don't think it'll be an issue at all.

A few weeks ago I did get a web gem, but I was the pitcher for the offensive team. There was no defensive pitcher. If I was the defensive pitcher, I may have made the play, but I think it would have been less likely. I'm in favor of trying scott's idea for march 5. Also, I don't think that live games have to be a walk fest. I didn't pitch all that well in my live game inning a while ago, but I don't think I walked more than one person. I can locate fine, if I could get more speed/movement on my pitches I think I could improve as a live game pitcher. Also, we don't play live games much. If we did, we'd improve. I think the stealing factor is more significant. I'm not too fast, but I feel that I can steal second at will, and third most of the time. I'd be in favor of playing more live games, but eliminating steals until out pitching improves.

We need to do a better job with the pitching stats at live games. They've barely been tracked so far. I'm not sure the answer, but I think I might be able to come up with a scoresheet that would make it easier.
Yeah, steals, balks.... have both been issues as well. We have had a good live game recently though....

I'm not quite sure how this turned into a discussion of live games, but while we're here...
What's contributing more to steals than anything else is the pitchers' complacency and lack of proper mechanics.
In other words, runners are getting away with murder because (under the assumption that they're gonna get away with murder either way) pitchers aren't even trying to keep them honest.
psychologically:
Step off the rubber.
Throw over (gently).
Just give them a look... or stare them down.
Use different pick-off moves.
Change your rhythm.
If a runner feels like he's not getting a good jump he won't run. Make him second guess himself.
physically:
throw over (hard).
speed up your delivery to the plate.
eliminate high leg kicks or pauses from your delivery when in the stretch.
throw more fastballs with runners on base.
pitch-out.
...
it's a long list of little things that will cut back runners' aggressiveness on the basepaths.

ken while there are alot of little things pitchers can do to keep runners honest. i know i can steal at least 90% of the time. im not that fast for godsake i smoke almost a pack a day! but no one has a good pick-off move so a 10 foot lead is fine. how many steals do we normally get a game comapared to how many caught stealing? i dont know the stats so scot will probally post the answer. but yes the only way we will get better is to practice picking off more also the only way we will get better at picthing is to pitch in more games.by the way its my fault this turned into a live game pitching thread. i just thought while defensive pitching last game wow im doing nothing. i mean i backed up throws, got in the base paths to try to catch sloppy base running but i didnt "make" any plays happen. also i felt that i was sometimes in the way of the middle infielders. so what did i contribute to the game other than my offensive stats.
also i like antmo's idea of defensive pitching if no live pitching
