I will start with Carlos Beltran, and let you all duke it out.

This season...so far...Barry Bonds.

Beltran...this year, last year or throughout his career? In KC he was underrated, after the 2004 playoffs he was overrated, but this year he's responded to the shouts of fraud very well. He's on his way to a 30, 30, 100, 100 season and he's had 4 previous seasons of around or above 25, 35, 100, 100. What can be overrated about that?

The only thing about BOnds is that, if you expected him to carry a team, dumb dumb dumb! But maybe what Paul is saying is that he was overrated by the MLB, shown by how much they walked him.

Mulder, absolutely. He did hold himself together while racking up complete games on the A's, but after his stress fracture in his right hip, he's been a POS!

Also, I'm thinking I'll have to go with CC Sabathia. When he's on, he's ON. However, he tends to tip his pitches too often, which renders him inneffective. Being an ace gets him a lot of attention.

While we're on the topic of pitchers, I think Randy Johnson is grossly overderrated [sic].

The only thing Sabathia tips that renders him ineffective is teh scales!!!

There is a differance between overpaid and overrated. Sometimes the market just forces teams to pay more than they should.

About Kerry Wood............

His durability and medical stability has certainly been overrated, but, when healthy, there's no question he had some of the best stuff in the last 50 years.

You don't strike out 20 people in a game (M. Alou, Jeff Bagwell, Craig Biggio, Derek Bell, etc. all were victims) without having an amazing, and superior, level of skill to place and move the ball. The only pitching I've seen that compared to the way Wood threw that day was the Randy Johnson perfect game a few years ago.... The sick lateral movement on the sliders and the huge differential between their off-speed and blazing 98+ MPH fastballs... Wood and Johnson on those days. I'd like to hear the case that this type of performance is a fluke and/or not indicative of massive skill.

Again, I don't question the fact that he can't stay healthy and is like the anti Barry Zito in terms of durability.

well he has never won 15 games and in a season and thats counting both of his full seasons, now i know the win loss record is the least important stat for a pitcher, but an ace should win at least 15.

and he has pitched 1100 innings in 7 years only twice going over 200 innings


so yes kerry wood is good, but not great. His health injuries are too severe and too often. let me know if he ever pitches 5 full seasons maybe i will change my mind then.

I still need you to explain to me how him (or anyone) striking out 20 MLB hitters in a game is a fluke. And if it's not a fluke, then you can't deny his skill. Once again, I'm setting aside durability...

Mark Whitten and Mike cameron have each hit 4 homers in a game. One night of greatness and a fluke or supreme ability and skill?

Kenny Rogers thows a perfect game...again, superior ability or one night when everything clicks?

I truly get what you're saying, especially with Wood, but one night doth not a superstar make.

For all the hype we hear every year about Wood and Prior finally getting the Cubs to the promise land...it is Carlos Zambrano who is the ace of that staff. Maybe it's bad luck but, maybe. just maybe, it's a lack of a work ethic and off-season conditioning and that, in my opinion, is a part of maintaining that hightly touted skill your're placed on a pedestal for. You choose not to work on it and let it deteriorate, you are overhyped.

(A few years ago I would've actually thrown in Andru Jones as well, but he's picked himself up since then, and I'd find him to be good enough.)
