Best All-Around Player?

Post by TheLegend »

I don't really keep up any more the way I used to (back when the answer was Ken Griffey Jr). I may try to get back into it this season. But what do guys think about the question?

The player has to have speed, power, high average and good defense.

judging only by last years statistics I'm gonna try and throw a name out there:

Vladimir Guerrero

top of the line in average#, power# and OF assists plus a handful of stolen bases.

I remember a few years ago when this guy was playing for the Expos some sportswriter said he was "the most overlooked athlete in sports". Well... not anymore I guess... or at least, I hope

Best all-round player... hum...

I think of this question as also looking for that young player who can be there for years and years to come. Ken took mine (bastard), but I would say that Puljos is my runner up. Yes, I know he lacks in speed. Yes, I know he can't find a position. But, in a way, that's what I like about him. He's willing to do whatever a team needs him to do.

I'm gonna put Carlos Beltran into that catagory as well.

Carlos Beltran needs to get his AVG over .300 consistantly for me to rank him that high.

hrm.... I remember it being higher that the .274 lifetime mark of his... oh wells...

What about Sheffield? Usually .300+ avg, 30+ homers, 100+ RBIs, and until he got to the Yanks he had 15-20 steals a year. From what I remember he's not a terrible fielder either.

Another to consider would be Andruw Jones, though I think his Avg is a bit too low as well.

And here's a little thing about Vlad taken from Yahoo Sports:

Code: Select all

Batting between Steve Finley and Garret Anderson, he'll continue to see pitches to hit, but if we've learned anything from Vlad over the years, there's never been a pitch that he didn't like.

2. If I am ever wrong, read rule number 1.

Heh. I think it would be interesting to have a stat like that tracked (i.e. average/pitches per at-bat or first pitch swing% etc.) I don't know who would come out on top... It actually would be a useful stat too.
