paul thats awfully big talk from a giants fan. they could barely get 75 wins last year and the sad thing is they still had a shot at the playoffs until the last 2 weeks.

but yes right now the al west is an ugly division but it will be the biggest dog fight for the season. and at the VERY least 2 teams will finish over 500, and one will be the A's (both of those are some thing the giants cant say)

Forget 3-7, The A's could arguably have the second best 1-9 lineup in baseball, we have 8 guys who will hit .270+ with 15-20 HRs... depth isn't our problem.

Our problem is getting 1 or 2 guys with a big bat in the middle of our lineup. Thomas was soposed to be our 30+ hr guy, but it doesn't look like that's going to work out.

We should've gotten Thome. We should've gotten Pena. Our team would be flat out better w/ those two guys than with Thomas and Bradley.

I'm just saying that it's funny how the AL West is all below .500. Beofre anyone else jumps up to defend the A's and bash the Giants, can I just say I am pretty sure it won't stay that way. My window of opportunity was limited, since the Giants probably won't be over .500 themselves for much longer, it seems, and so I had to get the dig in while I could!

Please name those 8 guys....I've got 6 in my head: Chavez, Swisher, Bradley, Thomas, Payton (with playing time), Crosby. But I must say that only Bradley and Chavez are locks for the .270 portion of that. Thomas used to be and Crosby and Swisher are unproven in the average dept.

Pat I haven't forgotten about you, I just haven't had time to voice my opinion on your Moneyball/Billy Beane jargon. Too much to say and I'd rather say it in person. Hope to see you Sunday. Granted, I may be a bit weakend now that Swisher has mashed for 2 weeks straight.

1. Mark Ellis (2b)- career ave: .273, hit 13 HRs last year in 122 games.

2. Mark Kotsay (cf)- career ave: .286, hit 15 HRs each of the last two seasons

3.Eric Chavez (3b)- career ave: .276, 20+ HRs in every full MLB season

4. Frank Thomas (dh)- may end up lacking on the average, (even though he's .300+ for his career) but is well on his way to 20+ HRs

5. Bobby Crosby (ss)- unproven, but hit 22 HRs in his rookie season and hit .276 in half a season of play last year.

6. Milton Bradley (rf)- career .270 hitter, hit 19 HRs in his only full season (141 games), also hit 13 in 75 games and 10 in 101.

7. Nick Swisher (lf/1b)- you got me on this one... he probably won't stay above .270 (despite his hot start), but will definately get to 20 HRs

8. Jay Payton (lf)- career .280 hitter, hit 18 HRs last year (in 80 games), 28 in 2003 and 16 in 2002
or
8. Dan Johnson (1b)-.275 15 HR in 101 games last year.

Scott: Wily Mo Pena- traded from Cin to Bos for Bronson Arroyo. He's 24 now and I'm convinced he'll be a long ball machine before his career is over. Kinda like a Right-handed Matt Stairs, this guy hits flat out tape measure shots. In two full years (using "full" liberally as he was splitting time in CIN) he hit 26 and 19 HRs

more important than the average of these guys is the fact that there are a lot of plain good hitters. OBP is well above average, and slugging shouldn't be too bad. it is a good 1-9, which should win a lot of regular season games. unfortunately, things are a little different once you hit the post-season. you need those big bats to make it through a five or seven game series. anyway, i'm not sold on all those guys. we shall see.

ken you forgot all about kendall  well i suppose thats a good thing. and i totally pena woulda been better than bradley. pena is a better player and a better person. and thome also woulda been a better move than thomas but not by that much. with thomas' foot problem it will make sure everyone gets playing time. and thomas was really cheap.

but by far the worst move the A's did was sign loiza. he is supposed to be an "innings eater", but who cares if you suck. wow i can pitch 8 innings who cares that i give up 7 runs im an innings eater

i really hoped i was wrong about loiza but after todays game im so convinced. he went 3.2 IN with 7 hits, 3 er's, a bb, and 2 k's. so his era is now a whoppong 8.35

how is he worth 6 mil
