Oakland Park Baseball

I've researched some wooden bat options for the East Bay: Both are open Sunday morning (open at 10:00), and both are convenient pit stops on the way to DeFremery. You still should call each to ask about whether they have lots of wooden bats, or if it's mostly metal bats. The supply at each store ebbs and flows over time. I think the Copeland's option has more wooden bats to choose from, even though the Sportmart option is actually a much bigger store.

So here's the details (directions assume you're coming from Sacramento, store addresses provided to do your own directions search):

Copeland's in El Cerrito. (510 527 7567 - 300 El Cerrito Plaza, El Cerrito CA 94530) This one is a brief stop off of Highway 80. Here's the directions:

80 West
exit Central Ave, LEFT on Central Ave
RIGHT on San Pablo Ave (3rd light after exiting and going left under freeway)
take 2nd LEFT into El Cerrito Plaza Shopping Center (Toward the back of the shopping center, # 300)

Directions from this Copeland's to DeFremery:
Basically make your way back to 80 by retracing your steps. Here it is:
exit El Cerrito Plaza Shopping Center
RIGHT on San Pablo Ave
LEFT on Central Ave
Go underneath highway to go LEFT to enter highway (toward "Oakland")
580 East toward Hayward/Stockton
take 980 toward Downtown Oakland
exit 18th street, RIGHT on 18th
Pass over Market, park is on your LEFT. Park on the street.

The other option is Sportmart in Emeryville. (510 450 9400 - 3839 Emery, Emeryville, CA 94608) For this one you don't have to go back to the highway after you get the bat, since it's closer to DeFremery. Here's the directions:

80 West
580 East toward Hayward/Stockton
BEAR LEFT to take the MacArthur Blvd Exit
DON'T take the San Pablo Ave exit, which is nearby. STAY on MacArthur
LEFT on Peralta
LEFT on Emery, go to 3839 Emery, Emeryville, CA 94608

Directions from this Sportmart to DeFremery:
Go back down EMERY
RIGHT on Peralta
CONTINUE onto Poplar
Take Poplar down to 18th street, park is on your LEFT. Park on the street.

I personally bought a great wooden bat at that Copeland's for only $10, and I still use it. I would aim to arrive at one of these places right when they open at 10:00 so you have time to select the right bat.

I was at copeland's in El Cerrito literally yesterday and their selection of bats (wood or metal) is pretty pathetic.

eBay store MassCloseouts has a nice selection of bats and other sports gear for reasoble prices... they ship out of AZ and turnaround to the Bay Area is quick. I two bats last Thursday and got it Tuesday.

Yeah, I've bought stuff from that guy, too. Don't remember what, but the name is familiar. You won't go far wrong on eBay if you stick to sellers that have a good feedback rating, and by good I mean at least 98%, and with at least 100 sales.
Just read the descriptions carefully, look carefully at the pictures and make no assumptions. Ask the seller a question if in any doubt. I have bought literally hundreds of things on eBay, and have only gotten burned once, when I didn't follow my own rules.

Yes... be very careful on eBay..the qualifaications Paul laid out are good guidelines to follow. Masscloseouts seems to pretty reliable

There is a great web site that you can order custom wood from that ships them pretty quick.....its xbats dot com. They even go -1 on the bats.

You guys *do* know about West Coast Sporting Goods in San Leandro right?? They have a ton of wooden bats. And a lot of stuff on sale. There are 2 stores. The warehouse has most of the wood bats--racks and racks... Go nuts!

(They don't have a website but you can google them to get the address.)

Don't forget the Copeland's in Emeryville near the Powell Ave. exit, land of the $20 bats.

This Copeland's location (Emeryville) doesn't open until 11:00 on Sunday mornings, unlike the El Cerrito one, which opens at 10:00 on Sunday mornings.
