Oakland Park Baseball

What I did was take the league leader boards, and gave points based on players rakings. (as of June 12, 2005)

First Place = 5 points
Second Place = 4 points
Thrid Place = 3 Points
Fourth Place = 2 points
Fith Place = 1 point

Now, I realize this is not a totally accurate portrayal of player's abilities, since players who have played in more games have an advantage. Then again, the MLB factors games played in their voting too. Anyway, this is just a tool.

First Place:
Kenyatte Davis
28 points

Second Place (Tie!):
Scott Leathers
Peter Lauterborn
25 points

Thrid Place:
Paul Cooper
20 points

Fourth Place:
Nick Warwick
19 points

Fifth Place (Tie!):
Pat Kelly
Will Jackson
16 points

PS.. A personal plug: look at what I did! And that's with missing 3 games to a concussion, one game to a repeat leg injury, and another game to a eye infection!

I have two ideas for MVP voting points:

1) A 3-pick system with the points as follows:
• 1st place: 5 points
• 2nd place: 2 points
• 3rd place: 1 point

2) A system where you have 10 points to split between 3 picks.

See how these systems affect the voting.

So in the first idea, are the points determined by where someone stands on the LeaderBoards, so if you have the most hits you get a 5, etc.?

Or, in the first idea, does everyone vote by picking their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd nominees, then the points are added up for each candidate and the one with the most overall points wins?


Now the 2nd idea I don't follow at all. Do people vote for this one, and they pick their top 3 candidates, then each person attributes points to each of their 3 candidates? And the voters, in this idea, have the right to disporportionally apply points, like their top pick they can give 8 points, 2nd pick 1, third pick 1, as long as it all ends up to 10?

Please reiterate your ideas here Nick.

I think Nick's post was perfectly clear. You got the first suggestion right with the second interpretation. Yes, the second suggestion could be abused as you suggested, but seriously, why on Earth would someone vote like that?

I can see where using the word "place" instead of "pick" can cause confusion, but you seemed to explain it pretty well. And yes, the idea behind choosing how many points to give your picks is in case you have trouble choosing between picks 1 and 2, you can split your points 4-4-2. While this presents the possibility of a tie, the tie-breaker would depend on who got the most "first picks".

Or, conversely, if you believe someone is a no-doubt winner you can split them 8-1-1.

To be clear: actual MVP voting will be done by all people who have played in the baseball group. This is all just stat crunching.

Right now, midway through the voting, I notice that the person with the most 1st place MVP votes is the same person who has the most overall point totals based on this system.
